November Labour Market Information

In November 2023, the Tourism and Hospitality sector continues to face challenges in employment and recovery, with numbers lower than pre-COVID levels across sectors and regions in BC.

Employment Trends:

In November 2023, BC's Tourism and Hospitality sector confronted persistent challenges in employment and recovery, showing a 3.9% decrease in employment from October 2023, dropping from 343,250 to 330,000. Notably, the Cariboo, Northern BC, and Thompson Okanagan regions experienced increased employment, while the Lower Mainland, Kootenay, and Vancouver Island regions saw a decline.

The Recreation and Entertainment sector outperformed pre-COVID levels, but other sectors exhibited reduced employment levels from October to November 2023. 

The unemployment rate in November 2023 rose from 4.5% in October to 5.2%, exceeding pre-COVID levels. These trends underscore the ongoing impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on the sector.

Despite these challenges, sales revenues in food and beverage establishments have surpassed pre-COVID levels.
