With higher temperatures starting to settle in, it is important that employers know the effects heat can have on their workers and take action to prevent heat stress.
Heat stress includes illnesses such as heat exhaustion or heat stroke. The symptoms of heat exhaustion include dizziness, excess sweating, fainting and muscle cramps. Heat stroke symptoms include increased breathing rate, lack of sweating, confusion, seizures and even cardiac arrest. With some preparation, you can easily prevent heat-related illnesses.
Increase water intake, drinking one glass every 20 minutes
Limit strenuous physical work during the hottest hours of the day (11 am- 3 pm)
Minimize heat exposure by having additional workers and rotation of work activities
Ensure adequate first aid coverage and emergency procedures are in place
Remind workers to be aware of their risk factors (pre-existing conditions or medications) and check themselves and their co-workers.
It’s never too late to think about how you will get your staff and guests evacuated quickly and safely should the issue arise. WorkSafeBC has compiled some excellent resources for employers to easily create emergency evacuation plans. Stumped? Connect with a member of our health & safety team for additional guidance. Email safety@go2hr with any questions you have.
Delivery drivers face risks everywhere, which can change from one delivery to the next. Assessing changing risks is crucial to staying safe. WorkSafe BC's new videos build awareness of workplace hazards identified by and for delivery drivers. They show drivers how to spot hazards and take steps to avoid harm when making routine deliveries. Do your part to prevent injuries while delivering.
go2HR and BCIT have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) to help BCIT international students find jobs in the Vancouver, Coast and Mountain (VCM) tourism and hospitality industry. These students are currently studying with study permits allowing them to work part-time and full-time during school breaks and are eligible for post-graduate work permits. BCIT offers a variety of programs that are applied, industry-valued credentials delivered in a flexible format to suit the employed workforce. Many students have flexible availability around their classes and can work to fill potentially hard-to-staff shifts. If your business would like to learn more, please contact Cindy Conti at cconti@go2hr.ca.
